Hope College has announced plans for celebrating the graduation classes of 2020 and 2021.   Baccalaureate and commencement ceremonies for the class of 2021 will take place Sunday, May 16.  The baccalaureate service will be at 8:30 a.m. outdoors, near Dimnent Memorial Chapel with attendance limited to members of the graduating class. Dean of the Chapel Rev. Trygve Johnson will be the baccalaureate speaker.  More: Hope postpones 2020 graduation to 2021  Commencement will follow later in the day, broken into two services. The class will be divided in half alphabetically with ceremonies at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Ray and Sue Smith Stadium.  Students with last names beginning with A through K will attend the 11 a.m. ceremony, with students with last names beginning with L through Z in the 3 p.m. ceremony.   

Attendance is limited to two guests per member of the class, with each graduate making reservations in advance and guests checking in on-site. Masks will be required.   In the event of inclement weather, the ceremonies will move to DeVos Fieldhouse and in-person attendance will be limited to participants.  Daryl Van Tongeren, associate professor of psychology will be the commencement speaker. The college is also planning a celebration for the class of 2020, which had its commencement canceled multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic.   The event is planned for Saturday, May 22, in the Pine Grove in the center of campus and will incorporate elements of a class reunion and traditional commencement. Jared Ortiz, associate professor of religion, and President Matthew Scogin will deliver remarks.   

All of the activities are contingent on conditions at the time and subject to recommendations and restrictions issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and the Ottawa County Department of Public Health, the college stated.
